Persistent ossiculum terminale: Sagittal (a) and axial (b) images from a non-contrast CT of the cervical spine in a 32 year old demonstrate a small, well-corticated ossific density along the superior margin of the dens (arrows on images a and b). This likely represents the persistent ossiculum terminale, which arises as a result of failure of fusion of the secondary ossification centre with the superior aspect of the dens.
